New role for MNREGS beneficiaries

The State government has decided to utilise the services of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme beneficiaries for collection and segregation of garbage under the solid waste management (SWM) programmes to be implemented in village panchayats.

According to an order , Rs.200 crore has been allotted for implementing SWM programme in 12,524 village panchayats. In phase-I, it will be implemented in 2,000 village panchayats, including 328 panchayats located on the outskirts of Chennai.
