It is been proposed to set up Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) at 40 government hospitals across the State that will take care of newborn babies having breathing problems and suffering from fits, according to Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam.
Ten such units had been set up and another would come up at a cost of Rs.25 lakh in Cuddalore Government Headquarters Hospital, he said at the inauguration of a government exhibition on Manjakuppam Grounds here on Saturday. These units would have paediatricians and specially trained nurses.
The Minister further said that the government had also launched life-saving treatment for infants up to one year. It would extend medical assistance to the extent of Rs.1 lakh. The benefit would be available even to those infants undergoing treatment in private hospitals. The Minister said that in the past five years, people had benefited from a surfeit of schemes.
Earlier, the Minister visited all stalls and in the one set up by the Police Department evinced keen interest in the latest guns, and bomb disposal and detection equipment on display.
Mr. Panneerselvam appreciated the efforts taken by Public Relations Officer Pon. Muthiah and his team for having organised the exhibition.
Collector P. Seetharaman, MLA G. Aiyappan, Municipal Chairman T. Thangarasu, and Vice-Chairman Thamaraiselvan were present.
The exhibition would be open to public from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. till January 31, sources said. There would be cultural programmes and orchestra every day.
