Work to convert the State Assembly complex on Omandurar Government Estate into a multi-specialty hospital is fast progressing and the Public Works Department will complete the work by December, Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar said on Thursday. The hospital is likely to be open to the public by February.

“The Chief Minister wants the hospital to come up on world-class standards. We are getting advanced equipment mainly from Germany. Once the Public Works Department completes the conversion work, we will take a month or two to install the equipment. Equipment worth nearly Rs.50 crore is being purchased for the hospital,” he said.

Based on a directive from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, he reviewed ongoing works at the hospital on Wednesday.

Public Works Department has taken up work to modify the complex to meet the requirements of a multi-specialty hospital. This includes construction of ramps and operation theatres. “Construction of a ramp up to the sixth floor is under progress and will be completed soon. The lifts are being modified to suit the needs of a hospital. There is good progress in works for establishing operation theatres and we are planning for an air sterile method,” he said.
