AIADMK general secretary and opposition leader Jayalalithaa on Wednesday hailed the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to move the Supreme Court to get a stay on the Centre’s nod to Kerala for a preliminary survey for a new dam across the inter-State Mullaperiyar river.
“I am glad to note that the Tamil Nadu government has responded to my appeal and decided to approach the Supreme Court against the Centre’s permission to Kerala for carrying out a survey to construct a new dam across the Mullaperiyar river,” she said in a statement here.
On Monday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had accused the Centre of according permission to Kerala without consulting the State and announced that the State would move the Supreme Court to obtain a stay.
The former Chief Minister had alleged that the government had delayed in taking the action and urged Mr. Karunanidhi to take concrete steps for “constructive action” towards the Mullaperiyar issue, which should benefit the people.
