From the next academic year, teachers of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and its affiliated colleges must possess NET / SLET score or Ph.D, said Vice-Chancellor K. Baskar here on Friday.

He told reporters that the teaching faculty of MSU and 73 affiliated colleges should have NET / SLET score or Ph.D., which would be the basic qualification for teachers.

Those who did not possess this qualification should obtain it before the end of this academic year. If not, they would lose their job.

Moreover, undergraduate and postgraduate students could hereafter take only two more years in addition to the stipulated duration of three and two years respectively to complete their arrears and get degrees. The duration for Ph.D. would be five years in addition to the mandatory minimum duration of three years.

“If not, the candidates will have to start their course or research afresh again,” Dr. Baskar said.

More seats

Following good demand for arts and science programmes offered by colleges under MSU in the past couple of years, the number of sanctioned seats in each programme had been raised by 20% in government and constituent colleges, 15% in aided colleges and 10% in self-financing colleges.

“Permission for increasing the seats was granted only after ascertaining infrastructure available in the colleges. We have also introduced 22 courses in our colleges from this academic year,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

Besides 100% tuition fee waiver, transgenders would get a monthly stipend of ₹3,000 from this academic year.

Steps had been taken to invite either the President or the Prime Minister for the convocation to be conducted this year, the 25th year of founding the university, he added.

Registrar A. John De Britto and Controller of Examinations S. Prabhakar among others were present.
