Tamil Nadu Textile and Common Labour Union (TTCU) has appealed to the regional transport officials to monitor condition of the vehicles used by industries for transporting employees to mills from various villages as several workers, mostly women, who travel in these vehicles, have been injured in road accidents.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, TTCU general secretary S. Divya said almost all spinning mills had been using either their own vehicles or hired vehicles to bring labourers to mills from villages.
These vehicles met with accidents often owing to various reasons. On an average, 250 women were injured in road accidents in a year.
“As per the Workmen’ Compensation Act, industries have total responsibility for the accidents of the labours inside the industries and during their travel to the workplace and to their home,” she said.
For example, eight women were injured when a private spinning mill vehicle overturned on Saturday while transporting workers from Pichampatti village near Ayyalur.
The grievously injured – Cinnammal (19), Palaniammal (17), Sathyalakshmi (17), Perumayi (18), and Periyakkal (16) – were treated at Dindigul Government Hospital.
