With the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) giving its nod for criticality in the second reactor of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, a 6-member team from Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change may inspect the facility for two days beginning Friday before submitting its report to the Supreme Court .
Though the AERB has given its final nod through the permission it had forwarded to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project administration on June 27, work on ‘first approach to criticality’ cannot be started straightaway as all safety measures have to be inspected by the experts of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
When the apex court heard the case that challenged the construction at Kudankulam, it mandated on May 6, 2013, that 17 recommendations of the AERB and 15 guidelines pertaining to environmental safety be followed scrupulously.
The Court also prescribed that the safety measures integrated in the reactor should be inspected by the experts from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Pollution Control Board and that they should submit their reports prior to criticality.
