The Madurai City police have booked DMK rural district secretary and MLA P. Moorthi on charge of abusing and threatening a journalist of a weekly magazine.

The MLA, representing the Madurai East constituency, and his party worker, Nehru Pandian, have been accused of having used abusive words against T. Backiaraj, 37, of Tirupparankundram. In his complaint, the reporter said that he had published in his magazine a news article on factionalism within the DMK and the MLA’s dominance.

Consequently, the MLA and Nehru Pandian, according to the complainant, had called him on his mobile phone and threatened him.

Based on his complaint, the Tirupparankundram police registered a case on Wednesday.

On Thursday, party leader S. Manimaran and a battery of advocates met Commissioner of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal and protested against the registration of the case saying the charges were false.

They claimed that it was a false complaint and the journalist was not at all threatened
