Jayakumar says boycott of his funeral was in deference to people’s wishes

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chose not to pay its last respects to M. Natarajan, husband of the former interim general secretary of the party V.K. Sasikala, in deference to the “sentiments” of its workers and the people of the State, Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar said here on Wednesday.

Replying to a query on the party’s silence and its staying away from the funeral of Natarajan, the Minister said it had been decided not to have “any contact in any form” with members of the Sasikala family. This was only a “reflection” of the feelings of the workers and the people. “We cannot change our position just to suit them [members of Sasikala’s family].”

However, in its issue on Wednesday, Namadhu Puratchithalaivi Amma , an organ of the AIADMK, carried an obituary on Natarajan, who was identified by the paper as the editor of Puthiya Parvai , a Tamil periodical.

Meanwhile, the mortal remains of M. Natarajan were laid to rest at his native village Vilar near Thanjavur on Wednesday in the presence of Sasikala.
