Meghalaya ex-CJI appointed chief of TN human rights panel

Justice (retd.) T. Meenakumari, former Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, has been appointed chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission.

Justice Meenakumari will hold the post for five years or till she turns 70, according to a notification issued by Public Secretary Jatindra Nath Swain. Governor K. Rosaiah made the appointment.

The post of chairperson has been lying vacant since August 2011. In September last, the Supreme Court asked the State government to fill the vacancy expeditiously.

Justice Meenakumari was the first Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court and she served there between March 23, 2013 and August 3, 2013, when she retired. Justice Meenakumari, who has settled down in Hyderabad, earlier served as a judge of the High Courts of Andhra Pradesh, Madras and Patna.
