Collector M. Karunakaran’s kind gesture and timely assistance to a poor orphan has ensured that monetary constraints will not come in the way of his desire to become a doctor.
After he lost his father Lakshmanan, a labourer, when he was only three years old and his mother L. Jamuna went missing mysteriously the next year, L. Rajini of Govindapuram in Hosur was taken care of by his grandmother, a widow.
Though abject poverty threatened the young boy’s aspirations of becoming a doctor, a matriculation school near the village took care of Mr. Rajini’s education up to Plus Two since he excelled in his studies. He scored 1,133 marks in public examinations in March 2013 with a cut-off of 197.50.
With help from school administration and a few well-wishers, Mr. Rajini took part in counselling and was admitted to Tirunelveli Medical College.
He managed to pay the admission fee with the help of a few philanthropists and but worried about paying the fees in the subsequent years.
His classmates and a few faculty members of TVMC came to his rescue. But the poor student did not want to trouble his friends and professors and approached Dr. Karunakaran last Monday (August 17) with a petition explaining his piquant situation.
One seeing the plight of the poor but meritorious student, the Collector asked Tahsildar Christopher to get details about the boy and submit a report to him.
Based on it, Dr. Karunakaran released Rs. 1.94 lakh from his discretionary funds and handed over a cheque to the student at the weekly grievance day meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday.
“I never expected such a speedy action from the Collector, whose timely assistance has ensured unhindered studies for me,” said Mr. Rajini.
