The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) has decided to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections with the single agenda of ousting the “highly corrupt” Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre.
A resolution to this effect was passed at its State-level conference on the occasion of 105th birth anniversary of the former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai here on Sunday.
The MDMK, which boycotted the last Assembly polls following its failure to secure a “decent” number of seats from the AIADMK, has indicated that it would contest Lok Sabha polls.
Resolutions expressing anguish over murder of innocent Tamils and demand for Tamil Eelam through a referendum were passed at the meet. Speakers narrated alleged atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan army against Tamils during the civil war. Their ire was directed towards the Centre for “ceding” Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka and its support to the island nation for the conduct of 23rd Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) meeting in Colombo in November this year under President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The MDMK condemned the Congress for passing the National Food Security Act in haste without incorporating many amendments, mooted by various parties, and consulting State governments.
The party flayed the Congress for its resolve to set up a nuclear power plant in Kudankulam despite peaceful agitation by Idinthakarai residents and for its reluctance to constitute a Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee for implementation of the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in letter and spirit.
Many assailed the DMK leader and former Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, for “betraying” the interests of Lankan Tamils and glorifying Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
However, all leaders refrained from attacking either the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, its leader Jayalalithaa or the Bharatiya Janata Party. The only grouse of a few was regarding the sale of liquor. Illegal sand mining and introduction of English medium in higher classes in Tamil Nadu were criticised in the resolutions.
