The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the State government to file a counter affidavit to a writ petition seeking a CBI investigation into the death of a person who died at Marakkanam in Villupuram district on April 25.
The petitioner, P.Selvam of Venmankondan village in Ariyalur said he, his brother, Selvaraj, and other villagers were travelling in a van to Mamallapuram to take part in the Chitrai Festival, organised by the Vanniar Sangam, on April 25. When the van was at Madurai Kazhikuppam, near Marakkanam, nearly 100 persons armed with deadly weapons waylaid his vehicle and began attacking the occupants. Selvaraj was pulled out of the van. The petitioner said he lodged a complaint with the Marakkanam police. Though a case of murder had been registered, there was no proper investigation.
Meanwhile, a Vacation Bench comprising Justices R.Subbiah and A.Arumughaswamy ordered notice on a public interest litigation petition seeking a Commission of Inquiry by a Judge to assess the damage to property in the violence at Marakkanam.
