P. A. Shyna, wife of CPI (Maoist) leader T. Roopesh, said that the police had been stacking up cases one after another against her and Roopesh to ensure that they do not come out of the prison.

“Today, they have arrested us in another case using fabricated evidence,” she told The Hindu while coming out of the Principal District and Sessions Judge’s court here on Thursday. Shyna’s husband T. Praveen, also known as Roopesh, said that they had not harmed anyone and all the cases registered against them were fake.

The Tirupur North police produced Shyna and Roopesh in the Principal District and Session Judge’s court in connection with a case registered against them based on a complaint filed by S. Parvathi (43) and Sudamalaimanai (47), both residents of Tirupur city.

The complainants stated that their ration card copies and photographs had been misused by Roopesh and Shyna to obtain SIM cards.

Police records arrest

On Thursday, the Tirupur North police formally recorded the arrest of Roopesh and Shyna in the said case at Coimbatore Central Prison, where the accused have been lodged since May last after their arrest near Karumathampatti. They were brought to the district court here after obtaining a prisoner’s transit warrant. Principal District Judge Alamelu Natarajan remanded both to judicial custody till June 16.

According to the police, Roopesh and Shyna befriended Sudalaimani and Parvathi at different places, during their stay in Tirupur before the arrest at Karumathampatti.

The accused then obtained the ration card copies and photographs from them under the pretext of helping Sudalaimani to get a job and enrolling Parvathi in a self-help group.

“It was during the police investigation did the two realise that the accused used the documents and photographs to get SIM cards,” said city police officials. The Tirupur North police have registered cases against Roopesh and Shyna under six Sections of the Indian Penal Code.
