Man arrested for attempting to rape 11-year-old

Police on Sunday arrested a 31-year-old man for attempting to rape an 11-year-old girl and injuring her by slitting her throat using a small knife.

Ashok Kumar, a resident of Thirumalpur, had attempted to rape the girl when she had gone to attend nature’s call on Saturday morning. The girl did not notice him as the area was filled with bushes.

He had pushed her to the ground, when she kicked him and raised an alarm.

On hearing her scream, an elderly woman had shouted back asking who was there behind the bushes.

Slit throat

Fear of being caught, Ashok Kumar took out a small knife that he was carrying and slit the girl’s throat, and fled from the spot.

Villagers rushed to the girl’s help, and her parents immeditely took her to the government hospital at Kancheepuram.

Though she was referred to the Chengalpet GH, her parents took her to the Institute of Child Health, Egmore in Chennai, police.

Police said they obtained a complaint from the girl’s father on Saturday evening. She had received 15 stitches for the cut injury on the throat and her condition was stable. A case was registered at Nemili police station in Arakkonam sub-division.

Nabbed

On Sunday, police nabbed Ashok Kumar and booked him on charges under sections of IPC including for attempt to murder, rape and causing hurt using dangerous weapons. He has also been booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
