Man arrested at Katpadi for possessing ganja

The accused was carrying 8 kg of the cannabis

Sleuths attached to the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau-Criminal Investigation Department (NIB-CID), Vellore, arrested a 28-year-old man from Tripura at the Katpadi railway station on Friday for possessing 8 kg of ganja.

A team led by N. Kokila, inspector of NIB-CID, Vellore, under the supervision of B. Geetha, Deputy Superintendent of Police, NIB-CID were involved in checking at the station.

The police said Jasim Miah, a resident of Sonamura, Tripura, was spotted coming out of the station. On checking his bag on suspicion, they found the ganja inside his bag.

Miah was an employee of a private security firm in Chennaiand was posted as a security guard at a company in Adyar.

He was returning to Chennai on the Guwahati–Thiruvananthapuram Superfast Express.

Overslept in train

However, police said he overslept and missed the station. He alighted at the Katpadi railway station at about 9.30 a.m. A number of trains were delayed on Friday morning after an overhead cable between Kangankarai and Tirupattur railway stations had snapped.

When he inquired at the station about trains plying to Chennai, he came to know that the trains were delayed. He decided to leave the station to take a bus to Chennai when the police attached to the NIB-CID nabbed him.

NIB-CID police said they regularly conducted such checks at the railway station, especially during weekends.
