Lorry driver killed

A lorry driver was killed and 10 persons including four women travelling in a private luxury bus, sustained injuries in a road accident that occurred near Natrampalli during the early hours of Tuesday.

According to the police attached to the Natrampalli station, the private bus was travelling from Chennai to Bengaluru on the National Highway 48, while the container lorry was plying on the opposite Krishnagiri-Vellore stretch.

The lorry driver, Theerthagiri, 48, of Kannigapuram in Ambur, had fallen asleep and lost control of the vehicle. The police said the container lorry jumped over the median and collided with the private bus near Melmallapalli near Vellakalnatham. In the accident, Theerthagiri sustained grievous injuries and died on the way to the hospital. Of the injured, four were treated as out patients, while the rest, including the driver of the bus, were referred to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, Adukkamparai, the police said.
