A library-on-wheels, a unit of the Saraswathi Mahal Library, Thanjavur, was launched here on Saturday.

The mobile library, with a collection of over 600 titles, will travel across Thanjavur and neighbouring districts, especially the rural areas, for the benefit of the reading public. Book lovers will get a discount of 10 to 50 per cent offered by the Saraswathi Mahal Library.

The library has been set up on a van procured at a cost of Rs.7.5 lakh sanctioned under National Mission on Libraries.

Launching the library, Collector N. Subbaiyan said that various development works had been taken up at Saraswathi Mahal Library with funds sanctioned by the State and Central governments.

The library-on-wheels, he hoped, would help promote reading habit among people. Members of the public who wish to donate palm leaf manuscripts, old documents, paintings and books to the Saraswathi Mahal Library can hand them over to the staff manning the mobile library. Similarly, those who wish to become patrons of the library can do so at the mobile library, he said.
