The National Law School, which will come up in the Srirangam constituency, will raise legal education standards in Tamil Nadu to international levels, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said here on Monday.
She was laying the foundation stone for the law school, which will be established on a 25-acre campus at Navalurkuttapattu on the outskirts of the city with an investment of Rs.100 crore.
She recalled that a school of excellence was established in 2002 at Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, functioning with seven government law colleges and a private college under its fold. However, keeping in mind the need for a national-level law school on a par with international institutions, the Assembly recently passed a Bill to establish the National Law School in the Srirangam constituency. The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for several other new projects worth Rs.60.27 crore in her constituency.
Bharathidasan University's constituent college, currently functioning from a temporary building, will get its own building at a cost of Rs.5.40 crore on Tamil Nadu Agricultural University land at Navalurkuttapattu.
To meet the demand of banana growers, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for a banana commercial complex, which will include a cold storage and godown. It will be established at Thiruchendurai with an investment of Rs.4 crore.
To cater for the needs of farmers in the region, four veterinary hospital buildings will be constructed at Andhanallur, Kuzhumani, Navalurkuttapattu and Pettavaithalai at an estimate of Rs.1.06 crore.
The Mukkombu (Upper Anicut) picnic spot will get a facelift at a cost of Rs.65 lakh, strengthening tourism infrastructure in the constituency. Foundation stones were laid for two other projects under the Tourism Department – an auditorium near Singaperumal Temple, Srirangam, and a canopied pedestrian corridor between the Amma Mandapam bathing ghat on the Cauvery to the Rajagopuram of Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple, sanctioned at a cost of Rs.6 crore.
She commissioned a battery-operated vehicle for the benefit of senior citizens and the differently-abled, acquired by the Thiruvanaikovil Jambukeswarar Akilandeswari temple.
Fulfilling a major demand of a section of Srirangam residents, pattas were issued to 1,810 residents of Melur, Vellithirumutham, Kondayampettai and Thimmarayasamudiram areas. Although they were enjoying the properties since 1927, the residents were unable to get pattas.
Ms. Jayalalithaa also laid the foundation for a housing tenement to be built by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board at a cost of Rs.24.44 crore at Dr. Jayalalithaa Nagar in Srirangam.
Drinking water schemes will be completed before the onset of summer.
These apart, the Chief Minister commissioned development projects, totally worth Rs.7.89 crore, already executed in the constituency, and inaugurated the distribution of welfare assistance worth Rs.71.82 crore to about 1.02 lakh beneficiaries under various government schemes.
