With confusion persisting over his position as general secretary of the Kongunadu Munnetra Kazhagam, a sub-regional party in Western Tamil Nadu, G.K. Nagaraj announced his resignation from the party at a press conference here on Saturday.
To a question whether he would form a new party, Mr. Nagaraj said he would wait for a couple of days or more for party president ‘Best’ S. Ramaswamy to respond. If he failed to respond with the desire for a patch-up and for stablising the party, there could be an announcement on a new party on February 2, Mr. Nagaraj told The Hindu , after further consultations with the party's 51-member decision-making committee. The entire committee, consisting of district secretaries and other key functionaries, had also quit the party, Mr. Nagaraj said.
The confusion over Mr. Nagaraj’s position has been persisting since early December. A letter dated December 10, 2013, purportedly sent by Mr. Ramaswamy informed him that he was being removed as general secretary. “When I asked him about the latest letter, Mr. Ramaswamy denied having issued it,” Mr. Nagaraj contended.
There have been differences within the party on which party to align with for the Lok Sabha elections. “We are for an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. But not directly. We have been firm that the KNMK should be part of the Social Democratic Alliance, led by Pattali Makkal Katchi leader S. Ramadoss. The entire SDA should strike an alliance with the BJP,” he said.
