Miscreants hurled a kerosene-filled bottle at the house of S. Baskaran (38), district office-bearer of the RSS, at Kundrakudi in Sivaganga district in the early hours of Monday.

Police said the miscreants, who came on a two-wheeler around 3.30 a.m., hurled the bottle at the house, which hit the wall between the main door and the window, and set fire to a lungi , hung outside the house for drying, using a lighter before fleeing.

Superintendent of Police T. Jayachandran, who visited the house, said preliminary investigation revealed that there was no personal motive for the attack and special teams had been formed to nab the culprits.

The SP said two persons came on a two-wheeler and while the rider remained on the vehicle, the pillion rider scaled the compound wall and hurled the bottle near the main entrance. He jumped out and escaped on the waiting two-wheeler. After local people alerted the police, a patrol team reached the house in 15 minutes but could not trace the culprits, he said.

Mr. Baskaran was away on a pilgrimage to Varanasi and his mother, wife, brother, brother’s wife and two children were at home, when the attack took place, the police said.

Mr. Jayachandran said images of the suspects riding a two-wheeler were caught in a CCTV camera installed in a nearby house and the footages were being analysed.

RSS State secretary A. Adal Arasu condemned the attack and blamed religious and linguistic extremist groups for it.
