Keralites running tea stalls-cum bakeries, eateries, workshops and groceries in the city and some suburban areas decided to put up shutters for two days on Monday in protest against the stance of Central and Kerala governments on Mullaperiyar dam issue.

The notices pasted on the closed shutters of their shops had called upon the Kerala government to strictly follow the Supreme Court directive on the water level in Mullaperiyar instead of politicising the matter.

Tea stall owners' representatives said the Kerala government should give adequate protection to Tamil-speaking population in that State and thereby allow the Keralites in Tamil Nadu to live peacefully.

“We want Kerala Government to safeguard the national integrity before making statements on issues like Mullaperiyar Dam,” they added. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Tirupur sub-division) R. Rajaram told The Hindu that the city police would continue motorbike patrolling.
