DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday expressed concern over Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi’s recent move to scrap the women’s self-help groups (SHGs) scheme.

Mr. Karunanidhi said that the move will affect women in Tamil Nadu as a large number of them were part of the scheme here and urged the State Government to take up the matter with the Centre.

“The Tamil Nadu government must therefore take up the matter with the Centre and tell them that the move will be a setback to the socio-economic development of women in the State and make it clear that SHGs should not face any problems,” he said in a statement.
