DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Sunday criticised the government for asking students of arts and science colleges to write their assignments and tests only in English. While condemning the move initiated by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, he said, “It will create division among the Tamil student community”.
In a statement here, Mr. Karunanidhi recalled that he had opposed the AIADMK government decision to introduce English medium sections in all government schools.
Referring to an argument that English medium instruction would help students get employment, Mr. Karunanidhi said English was not even a spoken language in many countries. In Russia, Germany, Japan, China, their national language was the official language as well as the language of instruction.
In another statement, Mr. Karunanidhi said the Union government should not dilute its stakes in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation. Such unnecessary steps would invite another opposition from Neyveli workers.
