The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Jayalalithaa is scheduled to address election rallies at Namakkal and Salem on April 3, the day she has been directed by a city court to appear before it in connection with cases filed by the Income Tax Department.

The AIADMK party headquarters issued a revised campaign schedule of Ms. Jayalalithaa here on Thursday. The cases pertain to alleged failure in filing of IT returns in the early 1990s.

The I-T Department had initiated criminal proceedings by filing complaints against Ms. Jayalalithaa and Ms. Sasikala in 1996 and 1997 for not filing returns in their individual capacities for the assessment year 1993-94. In 1997, the I-T Department filed two more complaints against Sasi Enterprises and its partners, Ms. Jayalalithaa and Ms. Sasikala, for failing to file the returns for the assessment years 1991-92 and 1992-93. The four complaints were pending before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court here since then.

After their discharge petitions were dismissed by the Madras High Court in 2006, the accused preferred appeals before the Supreme Court. Dismissing their appeals on January 30, 2014, the apex court directed the lower court to complete trial in four months.
