“Jayalalithaa has no locus standi to comment on law and order situation”

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Sunday said AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa had no locus standi to comment on the law and order situation in the State, contending that it was during her regime that innumerable violent incidents took place and the State “plunged into anarchy.”

In a statement here, he said the attacks on advocates K.M. Vijayan and R. Shanmugasundaram, former Chief Election Commissioner T.N. Seshan at the airport and the hotel where he had stayed, and the acid attack on IAS officer V.S. Chandralekha were some of the incidents that took place during the AIADMK regime between 1991 and 1996.

He said AIADMK men were responsible for burning alive three agriculture students at Dharmapuri and it was the AIADMK regime that arrested him at midnight.

Mr. Karunanidhi also rejected Ms. Jayalalithaa's allegation that the DMK government had failed to take any steps to control the increase in the price of essential commodities, saying the one rupee per kg rice scheme had provided a protective shield to the poor against inflation.

He said the government was also distributing toor dhal, black gram and cooking oil through ration shops to keep the price under check.

“In 2009-10 alone, the State government has spent Rs.4,000 crore for supplying essential commodities to ration card holders,” he added.
