In a joint operation by special teams from Chennai and Salem cities, police personnel rescued an infant stolen from the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital in Chennai on Tuesday.

Police sources said that a baby girl born to Manimekalai in the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital about a fortnight ago was stolen by some unidentified persons on Monday. A nursing assistant of the hospital was said to have helped in stealing the baby.

A special police team of the Chennai City Police led by Miller, Inspector of Police, Flower Bazaar Police Station, managed to trace the kidnappers by tracking the mobile calls made by them.

Childless couple

Since the mobile calls were made from the Guhai area in Salem city, Mr. Miller and his team, which arrived here, sought the assistance of Sanjay Kumar, City Police Commissioner. The Commissioner formed a special team led by T. Kannan, Inspector of Police, Hasthampatti, to help the Chennai team.

Both the teams managed to trace the accused hiding in a house in Atroraram North Street in the Guhai area.

The police teams rounded up Deenadayalan, 36, his wife Manimekalai, 32, and her relative Iswarya, 30, from the house and rescued the baby.

The sources said that the couple confessed to the police that they stole the child as they had no issues for many years. All the three accused along with the rescued baby were taken to Chennai for further investigation, the sources added.

“We are investigating whether the suspects were involved in similar cases earlier. This can be confirmed only after interrogating them. We are also conducting inquiries with a private security staff of the Government Children’s hospital in Egmore in connection with the case,” said a senior police officer.
