A call was made for inclusion of ‘Smart City Administration’ as a subject component for B.Arch programme on the occasion of the launch of Kongu School of Architecture with maiden batch of 40 students by the Kongu Vellalar Institute of Technology Trust, on Monday.

Infrastructure

The Trust has set apart three acres to create infrastructure for its sixth institution. A model building jointly conceived by architects, students and consultants will be constructed, S. Kuppuswami, Principal, Kongu Engineering College, said.

Architects must be given the freedom to think differently. Architecture programme, the mother of all arts and science courses, involves more of learning than teaching, Jagdeep Desai, Professor, Design Chair, Lokmanya Tilak Institute of Architecture and Design Studies, Navi Mumbai, said in his inaugural address.

Great career

India’s development slogans: Green India, Make in India, and Smart City, promises a great career for future architects equipped with the knowledge of environment-friendly management of garbage, pollution, and sewerage wastes. Architects have a pivotal role in designing residential townships of major industries and educational institutions.

There is a need for a course on ‘Governing Smart Cities’ in Architecture programme. Governing of such cities must be smart as well, Prof. Jagdeep Desai said.

Green building

G.P. Satish, Dean, Kongu School of Architecture, said the infrastructure will reflect a green building right from site selection, use of materials, conservation of energy and water, and incorporation of reduce, reuse and recycle concepts.

V.K. Muthusamy, KEC Correspondent, and P.C. Palanisamy, Secretary, KVIT Trust, also addressed the first batch students. E.K. Lingamoorthy, Trust president, presided over.
