Stating that education and reservation in government jobs would help remove the stigma about them in society and pave way for their development, transgenders wanted their 14-point charter of demands to be included in the election manifesto of political parties in the Assembly elections.
Addressing media persons here on Monday, members of transgenders from eight districts, coordinated by Salem Transgenders Welfare Association, said that after the historic Supreme Court judgement on April 15, 2014 that recognised the transgender community as third gender, changes were taking place in society. But they listed out 14 points that need to be fulfilled for their development and be in a par with other genders.
They wanted ‘third gender’ category to be mentioned in all documents instead of ‘others’ category, in ration card, electors identity card, passports and Aadhaar card. They said that they were categorised in OBC list at national level and MBC at State level communities list.
“Since we are in the general category, our development is hampered. We need two per cent reservation for admission in educational institutions and in government jobs,” P. Pooja, president of the Association, said.
