Members of the People's Coalition for a Greener Tamil Nadu, an independent and a network of civil society and community-based organizations, writers' unions and individuals, have asked the political parties in Tamil Nadu to include the ‘Green Agenda' in their election manifestos to ensure clean and green environment.
The manifesto was released simultaneously at Chennai, Salem and Ramanathapuram on Thursday. These environmentally-conscious people point out that it is the poor, the marginalized and the excluded sections of society who bear the brunt of the evils of pollution, natural resource exploitation and habitat destruction.
They claim that they are committed to bringing to the fore the principles of social and climate justice and work towards a sustainable approach to the development.
The issues that need to be highlighted, they say, include a sustainable agriculture in which the shrinking of land-man ratio, a critical problem has to be underscored.
Climatic variability and climate change through risk management strategies that minimize the adverse impacts of weather extremes should be encouraged.
