‘Implement Right to Service Act in State’

March 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - SALEM:

The Right to Service Act, aimed at making the Government servants accountable to the public, should be implemented in the State, said J.M. Boopathi, president of Salem Consumer Voice, here on Friday.

Addressing reporters, he said that the 150 services of 11 departments, including revenue, transport, food, civil supplies and consumer affairs, housing and urban development, police and social security could be obtained from the respective officers within a stipulated time. “Family card should be given within seven days from the date of receipt of application. If not, the official concerned can be fined and the amount is deducted from his/her salary,” he said. The Act ensured that there was no role for middlemen in obtaining certificates for the public and it had already been implemented in 14 States in the country, he added.

Mr. Boopathi said that if the Act was implemented, the performance of the Government departments would improve besides transparency in their functioning. He requested the State Government not to delay the implementation further.
