Officials of State Highways Department, along with revenue and police officers, removed statues of former Chief Ministers Jayalalithaa and M.G. Ramachandaran that were installed without permission near Chettiappanur on the State Highway 144 (Krishnagiri – Ranipet Road) on Tuesday evening.

According to an official of State Highways Department, they spotted two statues of Jayalalithaa and MGR installed on the highway.

“Someone had installed the two statues on the night of February 12. We conducted an inquiry but even the party members in the area were not aware of the installation of the statues. So, we informed senior officials of the department. They in turn asked us to lodge a complaint with the police,” he said.

A complaint was lodged with the Vaniyambadi police, who then said they would extend protection when the statues were being removed. Following this, officials of the State Highways, along with tahsildar and police personnel, removed the statues on Tuesday.
