A high-level meeting is scheduled to take place here on Friday to deliberate various issues concerning granite quarries in the wake of the ongoing exercise of survey in various quarries.

There have been reports of violation of rules concerning `, especially in Madurai and the police has arrested 21 persons in this regard.

In recent times, sections of the media reported some findings of the report submitted by former Madurai Collector U. Sagayam to the government a few months ago on the status of granite quarrying.

Asked whether any decision is expected at the end of the scheduled meeting, an official explains that the entire matter of granite quarrying has to be studied in depth before arriving at any definitive decision. Apart from instances of violations, several complex issues have to be addressed.

Pointing out that the report of the former Madurai Collector was a response to the government’s direction, the official says that several findings of the report have to be analysed by experts thoroughly.

For instance, questions have been raised about the present methodology of estimating recovery rates in respect of black granite and colour granite.
