Police have intensified combing operations to nab members of Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) who are at large after the Nalgonda incident.
Investigating agencies have stepped up vigil at bus and railway stations, highways and other busy areas on the AP-Telangana border, suspecting that the SIMI activists, who escaped from Khandwa jail in Madhya Pradesh along with those who were killed in the Nalgonda encounter, might have sneaked into AP.
“The AP and TS police have launched joint search operations on the border. Instructions have been issued to police personnel to be cautious while checking vehicles, as the terrorists may be armed,” said a senior police officer. Police have intensified checking at all entry points, particularly those identified as vulnerable places, in each district and are scanning vehicles, the officer added.
Police are also examining whether the SIMI have sleeper cells in AP. Investigating officers are conducting thorough checks in the identified areas on the AP-Telangana, AP-Tamil Nadu and Odisha border villages.
“Alert has been sounded in AP. Police are verifying CCTV footage at bus and railway stations for more clues. The State and Central Intelligence, Counter Intelligence and Railway Police have intensified searches,” an investigation officer said.
