The CPI (M), The Nilgiris chapter, has stressed the need for a scientific approach to deal with the escalating human-animal conflict particularly in Gudalur and surroundings.
Pointing out that a committee formed by the party had recently visited Paatavayal, Bitherkad and nearby areas to study the situation arising from the recent killing of a woman by a tiger and the violence that followed, district secretary R. Badri said in statement issued here on Friday that the area was still tense. Precautionary measures like digging of trenches and erection of sturdy fences along the forest should be taken.
Steps should be taken to prevent animals from straying out of forests for food and water.
Adverting to the arrest of persons who had allegedly been involved in the violence including burning of vehicles which followed the death of the woman, he said that only the culprits should be arrested and action should not be initiated against others.
