Students of Chikkaiah Naicker College formed a human chain here on Monday urging the voters to exercise their right to franchise in the Assembly polls without fail.
The National Service Scheme unit of the college organised the event as part of the drive launched by the district administration to raise the level of awareness among the people on voting and enhance the voters' turnout in the elections.
The administration had roped in colleges, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, Residents' Welfare Associations and various other voluntary organisations to conduct awareness programmes in the district. Over 200 students participated in the event and carried placards with slogans that urged the voters to exercise their franchise.
They also raised slogans asking the people to realise that casting votes during elections is a need, a right as well as a matter of pride. Wholehearted participation and cooperation from the people in the electoral process will help in strengthening the hands of democracy, they said.
They appealed to the people not to encourage cash-for-vote practice, which was detrimental to the democratic process. College Principal Sivakumar and faculty members were also present.
