Manamadurai police have arrested the watchman of a girls’ hostel run by Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department on a charge of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old Dalit girl in the hostel.

Acting on the complaint lodged by hostel warden Indira, the police arrested the watchman, identified as D. Selvam (55), under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on Sunday.

The accused was produced before a local magistrate and remanded in judicial custody, the police said.

The warden lodged the complaint after the victim, a class VIII student, complained about the sexual harassment by the watchman.

About 40 girls, studying from class VI to class X, were staying in the hostel, the police said.
