Soon, all 19 government medical college hospitals and a dental college in Tamil Nadu will go live with Health Management Information System (HMIS), the Information Technology initiative of Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP).

The TNHSP has been rolling out HMIS at government health institutions across the State in a phased manner. The management system has four components – hospital information system (HMS), management information system, college management system and university automation system.

It has already implemented the full-fledged system at 264 secondary care institutions - government headquarters hospitals and taluk-level hospitals, while government medical college hospitals are being covered in the third phase, according to officials.

“We have provided the required infrastructure for HMS, one of the components of HMIS dealing with OP workflow, to the 20 government medical college hospitals. Work on putting in place the infrastructure is almost completed. We have moved to training of staff now,” said an official of TNHSP.

With the training of staff commencing in many centres, this segment has been completed at a few institutions. “We are aiming at completing the training segment by March 31, and going live with the system in three months,” he added.

Under this, patient information starting with out-patient registration up to discharge is being computerised. Patients will receive a unique identification number. The medicines and diagnostic procedures prescribed by doctors, test reports will be available online.

At the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital (GVMCH), 99 per cent of the installation work has been completed. “We have obtained the list of staff in all categories including doctors, nurses and paramedical from the college and sent it to Chennai for this purpose,” said a district official.

With the training component pending at GVMCH, officials said staff of three Chennai institutions – Kilpauk Medical College hospital, Stanley Medical College hospital and Royapettah hospital – have already been trained and the HMS system has gone live here.

Training is going at the medical college hospitals at Sivagangai, Theni and Dharmapuri, officials said.
