RAMANATHAPURAM

High velocity wind in Pamban, Mandapam and nearby areas hit train services on Pamban rail bridge that connects Rameswaram island with the mainland for the third day on Wednesday.

As the wind speed exceeded the permissible limit of 58 km per hour, the anemometers installed at both ends of the bridge automatically turned the signal red, stopping passing of trains on the bridge for safety reasons.

For the third day in a row, officials terminated Madurai – Rameswaram passenger train (56721) at Mandapam after it reached the station in the afternoon. The train left for Madurai from Mandapam in the evening.

Rameswaram – Coimbatore weekly express, scheduled to leave Rameswaram at 7 p.m., and Rameswaram – Chennai Egmore Sethu express, scheduled to leave Rameswaram at 8 15 p.m., suffered delay, railway officials said.
