The progressing northeast monsoon and the low pressure in the southwest Bay of Bengal caused a fresh wet spell on Friday, bringing copious rains to Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts in Tamil Nadu and Karaikal in Puducherry.
Intermittent and widespread rainfall has been reported across the Cauvery delta districts during the day, when sky remained overcast. The district administrations declared a holiday for schools.
Life was affected in Nagapattinam and Karaikal districts. Many parts of Vedarnayam, Arukattuthurai, Pusphavanam and Kadaiveethi in Nagapattinam, Keelaiyur, Keelvelur and a few areas in Mayiladuthurai and Sembanarkovil were inundated.
In Karaikal, sea erosion was reported in a few places. Fishermen in some places, including Arkattuthurai, Porayar and Poompuhar, did not put out to sea.
Farmers in Nagapattinam and Karaikal districts who had just started applying urea to the crop were worried at possible inundation of fields.
However, Agriculture Department officials said the crops were not affected as of now. The maximum rainfall of 126 mm was recorded at Vedarnayam, followed by 34.6 mm in Thalaignayiru, 29.6 mm in Thirumarugal, 20.8 mm in Nagapattinam and 8 mm in Tharangampadi during the 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. on Friday.
The district received an average rainfall of 24.4 mm.
In Thanjavur district, Pattukkottai recorded 44 mm and Adirampattinam 42 mm.
Moderate rain
Several parts of Tiruchi district received moderate rains in the forenoon. Parts of the district experienced sharp showers on Friday.
The weather was overcast throughout the day. For the 24 hours ended at 8 a.m. on Friday, Meemisal recorded a maximum of 41 mm of rain followed by Manamelkudi 37, Keezhanilai 30, Aranthangi 27, Avudaiyarkovil 25, Kattumavadi 17, Nagudi 14, Tirumayam and Arimalam 12 each, Ayinkudi 11, Pudukottai and Ponnamaravathy 9 each, Alangudi and Perungalur 8 mm each.
