The Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the State government to file its response on a petition seeking to provide medical assistance to R. Chenturan, Sri Lankan national who was protesting against his detention under the Foreigners Act and lodged in Central Prison, Vellore

The Bench comprising Justices V. Dhanapalan and G.Chockalingam also asked authorities to reply within two weeks on a habeas corpus petition filed by Mangayarkarasi, wife of Chenthuran who stated that her husband needed immediate medical assistance.

Complaint

Chenthuran was arrested by Q branch police on February 27 based on a complaint given by his mother-in-law who alleged that he attempted to attack her with stick.

He was remanded and lodged in the Central Prison, Puzhal.

Even after a court granted him bail, he received an order from the authorities detaining him under Foreigners Act. Restricting his movements, he was kept at Special Camp, in Chengalpattu.

Fast

As he observed fast demanding to revoke the detention order, he was remanded to judicial custody and lodged at the Central Prison, Vellore.

His wife said he did not take any food and has been observing fast. “Unless proper treatment was given to him, his health condition would deteriorate”.
