The harbour at Nagapattinam will be expanded with additional facilities for anchoring boats, said D. Jayakumar, Minister for Fisheries, on Sunday.
Addressing officials after inspecting the harbour in the backwaters of Kaduvaiyar at Akkaraipettai here, he said that work on setting up of jetty on the northern side had been completed to a length of 500 metres with groin wall.
An additional jetty on the southern side of Kaduvaiyar will be taken up. The area would be dredged for ensuring smooth landing and venturing operation by fishermen. He said that a crane with a capacity for handling boats and machinery up to 100 tonnes would be provided for facilitating maintenance and repair works. He said that adequate processing facility, auction yard and rest room would be provided.
O. S. Manian, Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, and S. Palanisamy, Collector, were present. Earlier, the Minister visited the bereaved families of Kalidas, Kalaipandi and Vinith of Vellapallam in Thalaignaiyiru block who drowned in the sea on June 15 this year and expressed his condolence.
