Habitual offender detained under Goondas Act

The district police have detained a habitual offender and lifter of coal tar barrels under the Goondas Act.

Acting on the recommendation of Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan, Collector K. Nanthakumar ordered the detention of A. Murugesan (45) on Monday.

Chathirakudi Inspector of Police Raja served the detention order on the accused, presently lodged in the district jail here, after which he was taken to Madurai Central Prison, the police said.

The accused from Pudukottai district was involved in seven criminal cases, including five cases of lifting coal tar barrels kept in union offices in Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Sivaganga and Thanjavur districts, the police said.

After his arrest last month, the police recovered about 50 tar barrels from a premises owned by one of his accomplices in Pudukottai district, the police said, adding police teams were on the lookout for four of his accomplices.
