Groundbreaking ceremony for the Rs. 10-crore bridge across the Marudhayar river at Sundakudi is to be performed on Wednesday.
Collector M. Ravikumar inspected the preliminary works on Tuesday to ensure that the public was not inconvenienced during the execution of the project, an official release here said.
The Marudhayar irrigates 4,529 acres of land in Ariyalur subdivision through 56 tanks, 2,659 acres in Jayankondam subdivision through eight tanks, 3,460 acres through the Ponnar canal, and 5,091 acres through the Siddhamalli reservoir.
Repair
It has been recommended to the government to take up repair works, estimated at Rs. 7.5 crore, in the Ponnar canal which branches off from the Kollidam river. Minor repair works at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh are to be taken up at the canal that functions like a tunnel canal under the Marudhayar and irrigates several acres of land. .
When the public appealed to the Collector to build a bridge connecting Muthuvancheri with Vaipur, Mr. Ravikumar advised the Public Works Department officials to forward a proposal to the government.
He inspected the location near Kuruvadi village across the Kollidam where a Rs. 61-crore bed dam had been proposed.
On inspecting the seven-sluice at Kodalikaruppur, he directed the officials to renovate the dilapidated bridge immediately, ahead of the rainy season. It was imperative to complete the work expeditiously as the bridge serves 20 villages, he said.
He ordered construction of a causeway at the location where Anaikudi reservoir joined the Kollidam to help the people of Anaikudi. He directed the officials to lay a cement floor on the banks of the river.
