N.K. Senthamarai Kannan, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tiruchi Range, motivated the students to appear for the civil services in his Graduation Day address at M.I.E.T. Engineering College. A. Mohamed Yunus, chairman, M.I.E.T. Institutions, presided. A total of 438 graduates and post graduates, including university rank holders, received their degrees. S. Guharaja, Principal, was present.

College Day

V. Thiruppugazh, Commissioner and Secretary, Rural Development, Gujarat, exhorted students to succeed in life by pursuing their dreams through hard work, persistence and honesty while speaking at the 171st College Day of St. Joseph’s College. He distributed prizes and certificates. Rev. Fr. F. Andrew presented the annual report of the college for the academic year 2014-15. Rev. S. John Britto, Rector, and Rev. S. Sebastian, secretary, spoke.

Role of women

When man-made shackles were removed, women contribute well to the society, K. Thulasiah Vandayar, correspondent, AVVM Sri Pushpam College, Poondi, said at the national seminar on “Rural women entrepreneurship - the dynamics of progress and its reversal.” C. Thangamuthu, former Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, inaugurated the seminar. S. Balasubramanian, Chairman, City Union Bank, U. Balasubramanian, Principal, R. Palanivelu, organising secretary and Head, Department of Economics, spoke.

Seminar on water

An international seminar on “Water and sustainable development” and “Cloud computing in ICT - challenges and issues” was organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, the Centre for Climate Change (CCC), Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Periyar Maniammai University, Thanjavur, in association with the National Institute of Technical Teacher’s Training and Research (NITTTR), Chennai. V. Shanmuganeethi, Head, Department of Education and Technology, NITTTR, provided an insight into the issues and challenges before researchers. V. Ramasamy, Dean, Research, PMU, stressed the need for conserving water resources. S. Sampath, Special Chief Engineer, Public Works Department, Thanjavur, and T. Subramani from the Anna University, Chennai, T. P. Mani, Registrar, PMU, Erinjery Joseph James from Karunya University, Coimbatore, spoke. G. Thiruchelvi, Head, Department of Computer Science, proposed a vote of thanks.

Impact of tsunami

The Department of Economics, Rajah Serfoji Government College, Thanjavur, organised a seminar on the “Impact of post tsunami and post Thane cyclone in the Bay of Bengal” with the assistance of Union Ministry of Earth Science, and with the publication partnership of TiSSL International Publication, Belgium. V. Durairaj, Head, Department of Economics, welcomed the gathering. Principal S. Anbalagan presided. M. Manivel, Professor Emeritus, School of Earth Sciences, Bharathidasan University, delivered the special address. Brigitte Sebastia of Department of Social Science, French Institute of Pondicherry, J. M. Arul Kamaraj from the Department of Social Work, Loyola College, Chennai, and T. Thirunarayanan, Pudhucherry, spoke on issues that shaped the destiny of the tsunami affected and those hit by the Thane cyclone. Organising secretary A. Arulraj proposed a vote of thanks.

Incentive given

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has assigned US Patent No.8971531B2 to the SASTRA University for developing a system and method to embed data through ‘pulli kolam,’ the traditional Indian household art. This invention was part of a SASTRA funded research during 2009 under the supervision of R. John Bosco Balaguru and R. Amirtharajan to provide alternate channels of communication to transfer confidential information from one point to another. SASTRA University joins organisations such as APPLE, Samsung, Hitachi, SONI, NEC, Aerospace Corporation and Konica Minolta who have US patents in this area of steganography research. The management of SASTRA University awarded an incentive of Rs. 1 lakh each to the researchers.

Training programme

The School of Management, SASTRA University, organised a “marketing skills training programme” for the India Post officials that helped them to know emerging tools of management and technological advancement kits. J. T. Venkateshwarlu, Post Master General, Tiruchi Region, G. Natarajan, Director of Postal Services, Tiruchi, and V. Badrinath, Dean, School of Management, SASTRA University, spoke.

Sports Day

Swami Dayananda College of Arts and Science, Manjakkudi, Tiruvarur district, celebrated its 14th annual and sports day. Correspondent K. Bhaskar presided. Principal K. Krishnaveni welcomed the gathering. Gopalakrishnan, Administrative Officer, said sports and games played a vital role in shaping mental and physical strength of individuals. Vice-Principal R. Lakshmi Narayanan and Physical Director A. Sureshkumar were present.

Awareness camp

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell of the Arasu Engineering College, Kumbakonam, conducted an camp. The participants were taken on an industrial visit. M. Ramalingam, General Manager, District Industries Centre, Thanjavur, explained various schemes to help entrepreneurs, subsidies and other assistance being rendered to the MSME sector. M. Kamal Basha, Principal, K. Chellapazham, Chief Manager, Indian Bank, and K. N. Natarajan, Head, Department of Electrical and Communication Engineering, spoke. K. Robert James, HR Manager, welcomed the gathering. EDC Chief Coordinator S. Chandrasekaran proposed a vote of thanks.

Meet on modelling

S. Christopher, distinguished scientist and Programme Director, Airborne Early Warning and Control Programme, and Director, Centre for Airborne Systems, Bangalore, inaugurated a two-day international conference on Modelling and Simulation, organised by the School of Computing, SASTRA University. He outlined the challenges and risks in modelling and simulation and advantages of distributed simulation systems and the importance of verification, validation and accreditation. Airborne Early Warning and Control System, developed by Dr. Christopher and his team, is expected to be delivered to the Indian Air Force in June. Manickavasagam, Associate Project Director – AGNI V, Defence Research and Development Organisation, spoke.

Positive discrimination

A UGC-sponsored programme on Positive discrimination was organised by the Equal Opportunity Cell of Government Arts College, Tiruverumbur. P. Sureshkumar, former District Employment Officer, spoke on strategies required for competitive examinations. A. Kaveryammal, Inspector of Police, All Women’s Police Station, Tiruverumbur, and N. Kalyani from BHEL Hospital spoke on women empowerment for social development. A. Alex, Associate Professor of Commerce, St. Joseph’s College, and R. Rajaganapathy, District Employment Officer, spoke on opportunities and skills required. P. Sridharan, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, spoke on civil service examinations and A. Rajarajan, General Manager, District Industries Centre, spoke on entrepreneurship. J. Manjula, Principal, and S. Sutha, coordinator, Equal Opportunity Cell, were present.

Lecture on communication

Nehru Memorial College organised a lecture by S.R. Komahan Kavirinadan on Effective oral English communication. He said misconceptions among faculty members prevented them from communicating with their peers in English. Unless and until faculty members communicate in English among themselves it is difficult to cultivate an effective English language communication in educational institutions, he said. Pon. Balasubramanian, president, T. Jayaprakasam, Principal, and A. Prabaharan, Dean, spoke.
