The Government school teachers, affiliated to Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers’ Organisations, staged a demonstration here on Thursday to take their charter of demands to the notice of the Government.

C. Muralidharan, secretary of the Tamil Nadu Graduate Teachers Association, said around 3,000 teachers in the district, who were appointed on a consolidated pay between 2004 and 2006, should be absorbed into permanent payroll.

Another demand was that the grade pay of secondary grade teachers should be raised from Rs. 2,800 a month to Rs. 4,200.

The teachers also demanded the reinstatement of old pension scheme.

They appealed to the Government not to close the Government schools merely on the basis of shrinkage in students’ enrolment.
