Gold worth ₹1 crore seized at airport in 2 days

Two persons have been arrested at the Chennai airport for attempting to smuggle in 3.6 kg of gold worth ₹1.1 crore and foreign currency worth ₹12 lakh.

On Monday, Sikkandar Samsudeen, who came from Dubai, was arrested as he had wrapped 12 gold bars and four cut pieces of gold, totally weighing 1.6 kg valued at ₹48 lakh, in a black adhesive tape and concealed it in his pant pocket, a release said.

Foreign currency seized

On Sunday evening, Mohamed Sharif of Kasargod, who arrived from Dubai, was also arrested as officials found he had hidden 11 gold bars weighing 1.2 kg worth ₹39 lakh. He tried to make the gold appear like a mobile phone in his pant pocket.

The same evening, two persons based out of Madurai, Kaleel Raghuman Mustafa and Hajamydeen Ameer Mydeen, who had to fly to Singapore via Colombo were detained on suspicion. Officials found both of them had hidden $3,000 and 1,000 Saudi Arabian Riyals totally valued at ₹4.5 lakh, and 43,000 Riyals valued at ₹7.2 lakh, in their rectum.

Azarudeen of Sivaganga who arrived from Dubai was detained the same day for smuggling gold. Officials found a brown rubber material wrapped in a plastic cover which was kept in his belt. Officials extracted 285 gm of gold worth ₹8.5 lakh using a special process.

Jannathulasma Mohamed Hanifa, who came from Kuwait, was was also detained on Sunday as he was carrying 543 gm of gold worth ₹16.6 lakh in his inner wear.
