“Give another chance for MCI”

July 06, 2010 11:51 pm | Updated November 07, 2016 11:52 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

The medical fraternity across the country will hold discussions on ways to change the image of the Medical Council of India (MCI) in the wake of the scam involving its former president Ketan Desai.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had asked State health authorities, heads of hospitals and specialists to discuss its proposal to form the National Council for Human Resources in Health (NCHRH). The Central Government has proposed to form this body to streamline the system that was so far under the MCI.

One of the regional meetings was held in Chennai on June 18. More such meetings will be held, the anchor of the Chennai meeting and Chairman of Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery at the Coimbatore-based Ganga Hospital S. Rajasekaran says.

Union Additional Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, Keshav Desiraju, State Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj and The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University Vice-Chancellor Mylvahanan Natarajan also took part in it. Doctors are not in favour of the NCHRH being formed with non-medical persons. This can prove counter-productive. Instead, they feel that the MCI can be re-cast with a new set of guidelines that give no room for irregularities.
