Seven persons, including a human rights activist, arrested, 8 babies recovered

A gang indulging in kidnapping of children has been busted with the arrest of a woman.

Dhanalakshmi was arrested on May 18 in connection with the abduction of baby from the new bus stand here. During interrogation, she confessed to having handed over the baby to a couple living at Perambur in Chennai. The baby was rescued by police within 24 hours of the occurrence of the crime.

Based on the information given by her, seven more persons, including a human rights activist, were arrested, and eight babies recovered from various parts of the State.


The gang had its network in Krishnagiri, Chennai, Puducherry, Panruti and some other parts of the State.

A.G. Babu, Superintendent of Police, told reporters here on Friday that Girija, Dhanalakshmi, Siva, Alphonse Saviour and Rani were the brain behind the operations. Lalitha, chief of an All India Human Rights Organisation, who acted as a conduit, has been remanded to 15 days' judicial custody.

Of the seven arrested, five have been detained under the Goondas Act.
