Four persons were killed and 16 others were injured when a bus belonging to the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) had a head-on-collision with a brick-laden lorry on the Salem–Ulundurpet National Highway 79 in the early hours of Tuesday.
The accident took place at around 2 a.m. near Masanaickenpatti in Ammapet when the bus heading from Chennai to Mettupalayam hit the lorry moving from Tharamangalam to Perambalur. The driver of the bus T. Palanisamy (33) of Rasipuram, lorry driver A. Kumaravel (34) of Dharmapuri and two passengers Jayakumar (53) of Udhagamandalam and Dhanalakshmi (56) of Peelamedu were killed on the spot. The injured were admitted to Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital and were undergoing treatment. Traffic was disrupted for over two hours and normalcy restored thereafter.
The Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW) of the city police have registered a case and are investigating.
